Osobná História:
Carlisle, syn pastora anglikánskej cirkvi, vyrastal v období náboženského prenasledovania. Jeho otec, aby zbavil svet zla, viedol honby na čarodejnice, vlkolakov a upírov. Počas svojich štúdií v Taliansku stretol klan upírov, Volturiovcov, ktorí sa mu zdali oveľa civilizovanejší a vzdelanejší, ako tí, ktorých poznal v Anglicku. Aro, Marcus a Caius boli traja upíri, ktorí inšpirovali niektoré Solimenove diela. Napriek tomu, že boli kultivovaní, vytrvalo presviedčali Carlisla, aby začal piť ľudskú krv. Prirodzene, odmietol.

Spolu sa presťahovali do severného Wisconsinu, kde v roku 1921 Carlisle opäť stretol Esme. Tento krát jej zranenia boli výsledkom jej neúspešného pokusu o samovraždu. Carlisle si ju pamätal, a preto, že cítil ľútosť nad jej osudom, premenil Esme, aby jej život zachránil. Obaja sa do seba zamilovali a oficiálne sa zosobášili. (Sobáš si zopakovali iba jediný raz.)
